Designing a Creative Career that Works For You

    Date: Tuesdays, February 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd

    Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm

    Cost: $45

    Instructor: Nick Thornburg

Location: ZOOM ONLY (link will be sent  January 31st)

    About:
Launching a creative career is a difficult, intimidating task. Creative fields are notoriously difficult to break into, and traditional systems often place creatives at a significant disadvantage, leading many to abandon their creative pursuits altogether. But the state of work and the overall economy are shifting in interesting ways, making it possible for more people to be able to dive into the creative fields. Now creative people can employ the same principles used by innovators and entrepreneurs to craft a creative career that aligns with their own unique situation, capabilities, and individual requirements.

In Designing a Creative Career that Works For You artist and writer Nick Thornburg will guide students through the fundamentals needed to navigate the creative industry today. Whether you’re a beginner hoping to break in, or a seasoned professional looking to advance her career, this class will provide valuable insights that will help you make better decisions, improve planning, and narrow your focus in productive ways. The class will feature lectures and discussion on a range of important topics, including: the state of the creative industry, business practices and pitfalls, new technology and innovations in the creative space, critical thinking and its role in creative career decision-making, communication principles, marketing, and related lessons from the world of entrepreneurship. Classes will include case-studies and personal exercises that will apply the subject matter to students’ individual creative goals.

    About the Instructor:
Nick Thornburg is a multidisciplinary artist and writer, and a former artist-in-residence at Lander Art Center. He is the 2018 winner of the Spirit of Wyoming art competition in Jackson, a three-time recipient of Best in Show during The Nicolaysen Art Museum‘s annual art gala, and has been featured on Wyoming Public Television. His work has been shown on the independent stage and screen, overseas, and at various institutions and exhibition spaces in the United States, including the Yellowstone Art Museum, the State Historical Museum of Iowa, and the White House Visitor Center. Work of his is part of The Nicolaysen Art Museum’s permanent collection. Through his research, writing, and studio work he illuminates relationships between objects commonly held in opposition and probes deep into the meaning and practice of creativity.
