Tips for Writing Your Artist Statement
-a great way to keep in touch with your creative goals-
Your artist statement is required for all shows at the Lander Art Center. Viewers appreciate learning more about the artwork and hearing the artists' voice.
1. Use your own voice but write about your work, not yourself.
2. When discussing your methods, media or technique, be clear and specific.
3. Use a conversational tone to talk about your philosophy or emotional connection to your work.
4. Keep it to one page or less.
5. Don't use phrases that denote uncertainty or self deprecation, like "I'm trying to..." or "I think that..."
6. Read it aloud. This will help you catch grammatical mistakes and run-on sentences.
7. Edit. And use a trusted artist friend to help you.
8. Have fun, and know that an artist statement is an organic work in progress, always!
