Judges (Judging will occur week of August 16, 2010.)

Zach Even    Zach’s passion for nature developed in childhood growing up in Green River, Wyo. In spacious Wyoming, Zach learned to tie flies, hike and climb mountains, hunt with a bow or modern firearm, and enjoy a hearty meal with good friends over a campfire. As a teen, he tucked notepads into his pack to sketch what he saw, satisfying a desire to connect with a natural world we often are disconnected from. So it was natural for Zach to transform these snapshots to canvas.

His talent landed him a job as a graphic designer for the outdoor retailer Cabela’s, where his paintings and sketches attracted the attention of company executives when they were looking for artwork to adorn catalog covers. Zach’s eye-catching painting of a trout filling up on nymphs earned him the coveted cover of the annual fly fishing catalog. And his rendition of a pronghorn buck was selected by Nebraska’s Game and Fish Commission for use on the Nebraska Habitat Stamp one fall.

Zach continually pushes himself to refine his skill.  His work holds the viewer’s eye because of its unique perspective, emotion, clarity, color, detail and even humor; his paintings and sketches truly capture an authentic moment in time.

Tom Lucas    A Wyoming artist, Tom Lucas has dedicated the past forty years engaging in his pursuit of painting distinctive western art. Tom Lucas was recently accepted as an Associated Member of the Oil Painters of America based in Illinois. His biggest influences have been Charlie Russell, Carl Rungius, Bob Kuhn, Ken Carlson, Nicolas Fechin, and David Leffell, to name a few. Tom lives near the Wind River Mountains with his wife Tammy who stands by his side in all his endeavors to persevere.

On Originality: Any entry that is recognized as a copy will not be hung.  The following definition of original work was composed by professional artist Mary Back of Dubois, WY:

"A direct copy of another's artwork is not acceptable whether the work copied is the actual artwork or a photograph of it published in a magazine or book, and whether or not the size is different.  A direct copy of a postcard or other published photograph is not acceptable, on the grounds that the composition and color scheme are someone else's.  It is acceptable to work from your own photographs, for in that case, you have decided on the composition and chosen the lighting which decides the color scheme.  Within these concepts, we leave it to the conscience of the artist, whether the work he submits is his own work, or the entire creative inspiration of someone else."

Display All works to be hung must be securely wired and ready for display.  All entries must remain on exhibit until the show closes.  Artists who desire to insure their work must make their own arrangements.  The Red Desert Audubon Society and the Lander Art Center will not be responsible in case of loss or damage.  All reasonable care will be taken with entries.  We urge you to use plexiglass instead of glass.
